Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil: What’s The Difference?

Adding oil to engine

At the Whitten Brothers of Richmond service center, we’re equipped to handle all sorts of auto services, including oil changes. You probably know that there are a lot of different oil grades, but the three main types are conventional, synthetic, and synthetic blend. What’s the difference between these oil types? Compare synthetic vs. regular oil and full synthetic oil vs. synthetic blends below to learn more.

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Conventional oil (also known as regular oil) is petroleum-based and has been added to engines for years. Regular oil is distilled from crude oil and helps regulate heat, lubricate the engine’s moving parts, and reduce wear and tear.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Like regular oil, synthetic oil is petroleum-based. Compared to regular oil, synthetic oil oxidizes more slowly and lasts longer. Because it’s more refined, synthetic oil provides enhanced lubrication properties, which helps pull heat away from the engine more effectively. This is why synthetic oil is recommended for high-performance vehicles, and why most manufacturers now recommend it for their new vehicles. To recap, synthetic oil is:

  • Less viscous at lower temperatures.
  • More adept at cleaning the engine.
  • Better at protecting turbo engine parts (when applicable).

How Do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

Synthetic blends are the middle ground between synthetic and conventional oils. As the name suggests, synthetic oil blends are made from a mix between synthetic and regular oils. Compared to full synthetic oil, synthetic oil blends are less costly, and offer some enhanced performance properties vs. regular oil.

Keep in mind that most of the new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM vehicles need full synthetic oil to operate efficiently. If you’re considering a synthetic motor oil blend to save some money, be sure to check your owner’s manual for more information, or speak to one of our service technicians.
